An increasing number of parents have the feeling that traditional schooling does not nurture their children in the best possible way; and most of us know that a national education monopoly can collide with individual interests. Power corrupts purpose.
Erich Fromm once said, that our quest for certainty blocks the search for meaning, and so we choose conformity and put our children against our better feeling through industrial education systems. However, we have the strong believe, that tapping into the full potential of each individual does serve society at large in the best possible way.
In particular families in a third culture setting and families who consider themselves rather cosmopolites than national subjects, have quite specialized requirements for their children, e.g. in terms of language capabilities or multiple intelligence nurturing.
Home schooling is a possible alternative to traditional education, which could provide the flexibility to accommodate such needs. It has though one very obvious downside in particular during the primary years: social interaction with children of similar age. The advantages of a highly flexible curriculum must therefore be put against the risk of emotional isolation and the danger of suffering a setback in the development of social skills.
HOMEGROWN is an initiative for like minded parents to induce a pragmatic education change which rests on the interaction triangle between children, parents and teachers and the six education pillars of time, space, resources, attitude. It seeks a blend between the advantages of organized education and free learning. Instead of handing over the education of our offspring to state authorities, we cooperate with informal institutions to transform learning into a dynamic experience which allows individual as well as collective progress and growth.
